Houston Heights, TX
Norhill Historic District is one of Houston’s uniquely preserved communities of original 1920s and 1930s bungalows. Differing from its surrounding Victorian style architecture, Norhill displays a simple, single or modest two story design, low-profile roofs and trademark covered porches offering residents an escape from the brutal Houston summers.
Developed in 1920 by William C. Hogg, the once open pastureland and pecan grove has been home too many families over the years, transforming with each generation. One resident, Marie Melde, has been a resident of Norhill for over 90 years and remembers walking through the woods on the south side of Norhill to walk to church. Imagine, wooded land in the middle of what we now know as the Greater Heights! Marie was born in her home on Oak Ridge Street and is one of Norhill’s original residents. As her memory has begun to fade, her fond memories and stories of playing in the streets and watching the once small saplings grow into lush mature trees.
Though the landscape has changed over time, the community has managed to keep its charm both in architecture and in residents who call it home today. With walkable restaurants like Gypsy’s Poet, Sushi by the Heights, Studewood Cantine, Field & Tides, Bellagreen, Maison Pucha, Mastrantos and the threefold sustainable department store Asch Building, you can find everything you need right here for a small town in a big city vibe!
I could not imagine living anywhere else!
